Babe Bhangra Paunde Ne Movie Review

Released within a year, Anurag Singh's 'Jatt & Juliet(2012) and 'Jatt & Juliet 2' (2013) were similar in nature not because of the plot but because of a shared treatment given to them within similar boundaries.

Also released within a year, Amarjit Singh Saron's 'Honsla Rakh(2021) and 'Babe Bhangra Paunde Ne' (2022) have it in them to be remembered on similar lines of a shared treatment within similar boundaries.

Director Saron, male lead Diljit Dosanjh, cinematographer Baljit Singh Deo, shot in Canada, high production value, twenty-first century lingo, opulent clothes and locations, swanky cars and a lot of swag are some of the similarities written all over both Honsla Rakh and Babe Bhangra Paunde Ne. These similarities haven't been touched upon in a negative way, mind you. It is what it is, it is what the makers want you to watch and enjoy unabashedly and it is what has been executed aptly.

Babe Bhangra Paunde Ne is basically a story of three friends namely Jasjeet Jaggi (Dosanjh), Bhullar (Sangtar Singh) and Koki (Lakhan Pal). Desirous of getting rich and getting there quickly, the trio, under the leadership of Jaggi and imaginary mentorship of Elon Musk, pitch highly innovative (read farcical) ideas to potential investors only to get rejected time and again.

Jaggi, an orphan, eventually takes a leaf out of his employer's book and decides to adopt an elderly parent in the hope of getting rich via an insurance claim. With Bhullar and Koki agreeing to join hands (both literally and metaphorically), they make all necessary but expensive arrangements of executing this manipulative, cold-blooded and selfish plan.

Not just these three friends' plan make wonders but the plan of Saron and writer Naresh Kathooria to put together a funny and enjoyable movie also makes wonders. Now, you will come out dejected if you are expecting substance or logic out of Babe Bhangra Paunde Ne. Nowhere near the priorities of this comedy movie, Babe Bhangra Paunde Ne will make you laugh with shenanigans of its own and those of Dosanjh.

Visible in each and every frame of the movie, Dosanjh reigns supreme in his comfort zone yet again. No prizes for guessing that he is the best thing that could have happened to Babe Bhangra Paunde Ne. Dosanjh, who doesn't falter at being his usual cool, chic and ritzy self, looks attractive both physically and amusingly.

Having said that, Dosanjh's first collaboration with actor Sargun Mehta (Preet) doesn't comprise of an archetype romantic chemistry. This isn't because the two adept actors don't look good together on-screen but because Kathooria hasn't written their characters in a way that they would fall for each other like in proper romantic movies. With comedy being at the helm, mushy romantic sequences don't have a lot of scope in Babe Bhangra Paunde Ne.

A rare Punjabi comedy movie catering to the musical genre as well, Babe Bhangra Paunde Ne's songs are worthy of admiration and add to the overall razzmatazz of a fun-loving, delightful and an aesthetically beautiful family movie with a heartening message.

TIP: Watch out for actor Sohail Ahmed (Iqbal Chaudhary) in the movie. Making his debut in the Punjabi film industry, Ahmed leaves an impression especially with his comic timing in the second half. Written astutely by Kathooria on the back of taking inspiration from the comical self of former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, the idea meets with success in Babe Bhangra Paunde Ne.
