The sequel to the big-budget sci-fi spectacle Kalki 2898 AD has taken an unexpected turn, with leading lady Deepika Padukone officially stepping away from the project. The announcement by production house Vyjayanthi Movies confirmed her exit, citing “commitment issues” as the reason.
The development has left fans stunned, as Deepika’s presence was considered central to the first installment of the Prabhas-led franchise. Soon after the news broke, conversations online began heating up over who might step into the role. Hollywood star Sydney Sweeney’s name has emerged at the forefront of speculation.
Adding weight to the buzz, a report by The Sun recently claimed that Sweeney has been offered a lucrative deal to headline a mega-budget international project, reportedly valued at more than ?530 crore. According to the outlet, the package includes a hefty £35 million fee (approx. ?415 crore) and another £10 million (over ?115 crore) tied to endorsements and sponsorships. Observers believe this could well be linked to the Kalki sequel.
Meanwhile, the official note from Vyjayanthi Movies read: “This is to officially announce that @deepikapadukone will not be a part of the upcoming sequel of #Kalki2898AD. After careful consideration, we have decided to part ways. Despite the long journey of making the first film, we were unable to find a partnership. And a film like Kalki 2898 AD deserves that commitment and much more. We wish her the best with her future works.”
Industry chatter suggests that financial disagreements may have contributed to the split, though no confirmation has come from either side.
If Sydney Sweeney does join the cast, it would mark a bold crossover move, potentially broadening the film’s reach in Western markets. For now, fans await official word, but the combination of Tollywood spectacle and Hollywood star power has already set social media abuzz.
