The makers of Batwara 1947 have finally unveiled the first motion poster of the much-awaited period drama, offering audiences a glimpse into Sunny Deol’s powerful new character. The film, which was earlier known as Lahore 1947, is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on August 14, 2026.
The newly released poster presents Deol in a fierce and determined avatar, holding a blazing torch while standing protectively beside his family amid a tense backdrop. Accompanied by the tagline, “In times of hatred and fear, he chose courage,” the visual hints at a story rooted in resilience, sacrifice and survival during one of the most turbulent chapters in Indian history.
The poster has already sparked conversations among fans, many drawing comparisons with Deol’s iconic image from the Gadar franchise. While the legendary hand pump became a symbol of his strength in Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, the torch in Batwara 1947 appears to represent hope and leadership during a period marked by uncertainty and division.
Adding to the excitement is the return of Preity Zinta to the silver screen. The actress reunites with Sunny Deol after several successful collaborations and marks a significant comeback with the historical drama. The ensemble cast also includes Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal and Karan Deol in pivotal roles.
Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced under the banner of Aamir Khan Productions, the film is set against the backdrop of the Partition of India in 1947. The narrative is expected to explore the emotional upheaval, human relationships and personal struggles that emerged during the historic event.
The title itself has an interesting journey. Industry reports suggest that the makers initially explored different naming options before finalising Batwara 1947. Rights associated with the title were reportedly acquired from the family of producer Salim Akhtar, whose 1989 film Batwara remains a notable chapter in Hindi cinema. The process was said to have involved discussions facilitated by filmmaker Karim Morani and culminated in an agreement between the two parties.
With a compelling subject, a star-studded cast and the backing of one of Bollywood’s biggest production houses, Batwara 1947 is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated releases of 2026. The first look has already generated considerable buzz, setting the stage for what promises to be an emotionally charged cinematic experience.
