As far as the Punjabi film industry is concerned, the year 2018 gives the impression of being a step in the right direction. Movies of genres which break the tradition and never seen before budgets have been the highlight of the year so far. The same is expected to persevered with in the months to come. One movie which is likely to be a path-breaking one in the Punjabi industry is Vijay Kumar Arora’s ‘Harjeeta’.
Vijay Kumar Arora has worked as a cinematographer in various Hindi movies. An experienced campaigner of more than two decades, he made his directorial debut in the Punjabi industry in 2013 with ‘R.S.V.P. – Ronde Saare Vyah Picho’. The official poster of his second movie was released yesterday amidst infinite zeal. To the likes of the makers of the movie, the first look of the movie has been widely appreciated by the audiences for it resembles the real-life Harjeet Singh to a large extent. There are movies which come and go and then there are movies which are remembered forever. Harjeeta is expected to fall in the latter category.
A lot of it falls down to the lead actor of the movie, Ammy Virk. There is no hiding to the fact that Ammy Virk has found the formula of giving back to back hit movies in the Punjabi industry. Having said that, the hard work which he has put in in this movie is beyond comparison with any of his earlier movies. Every actor works hard on his acting, but there are a few actors who undergo transformation the way Ammy Virk has undergone in Harjeeta. Since the day he revealed his first look for the movie, he has demanded nothing but respect from the Punjabi fraternity.
The movie is a biopic on mid-fielder of the Indian Hockey team, Harjeet Singh Tuli, alias Harjeeta. He captained the Indian team to victory in the 2016 Men’s Hockey Junior World Cup. Beating Belgium in the final at Lucknow, the team continued its unassailable spree in the tourney.
But all this affluence, this recognition, this dream did not come instantly. It had been fulfilled only after years of intolerable levels of hardships, both on the part of Harjeet Singh and his family. Son of a truck driver from Kurali, Harjeet did not receive the best of facilities to practice on during the initial stages of his career. Inappropriate facilities and inadequate finances had brought him to a stage where continuing with the sport appeared a far-fetched reality.
This struggle did not get the better of Harjeet as he was determined enough to fulfil his dream. His grit of representing the nation had taken over the then existing situation at home, where even making ends meet was a daunting task. A product of the Surjit Hockey Academy in Jalandhar, Harjeet rose up the ranks in Punjab and went on to win the Junior World Cup for India. He represents Delhi Waveriders in the Hockey India League.
Harjeeta is all about this rags to riches story of Harjeet Singh. The movie will release on May 18. Stay tuned for more updates. This is how Harjeet Singh celebrated after winning the World Cup:
